Las Catalinas

A walkable beach town on Playa Danta, between Potrero and Playas del Coco.

Las Catalinas is a planned beach town on Playa Danta, founded in 2006 by Charles Brewer on the principles of New Urbanism. Cars park at the edge of town; inside, residents walk narrow streets, stairs, and plazas between homes, restaurants, shops, the beach club, and the sand.

The town occupies a small part of roughly 1,200 acres. About 1,000 acres remain protected tropical dry forest, crossed by some 35 kilometers of hiking and mountain-bike trails. Two beaches front the town: Playa Danta, in a sheltered bay, and the smaller Playa Dantita a short walk north.

Why Las Catalinas

Las Catalinas is built so that daily life happens on foot. Coffee, dinner, the beach, and the trailhead are all a walk from the front door, and the town’s scale keeps neighbors and friends in the same plazas. The architecture is deliberate: courtyards, arcades, custom tile, and terraces that open to the bay. The calm water at Playa Danta suits swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking, and the surrounding forest makes hiking and riding part of the routine rather than an outing. Buyers here want a real town rather than a resort, with a lock-and-leave home that works as well for a week as for a season.

Community Highlights

Playa Danta and Playa Dantita. Two beaches in front of town. Danta’s sheltered bay is well suited to swimming, stand-up paddling, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Trails. About 35 kilometers of hiking, trail-running, and single-track mountain-bike trails through the protected dry forest, with ocean views.

Beach Club. Pools and a restaurant on Playa Danta for residents.

Hotels and dining. Two hotels, Santarena and Casa Chameleon, plus restaurants, cafés, and shops in the town center.

Nearby. Playa Potrero is about 6 kilometers south and Playa Flamingo about 8.5 kilometers, with Marina Flamingo roughly 10 to 15 minutes away.

Real Estate in Las Catalinas

Property includes townhouses and homes in the town center, condominiums and terraced flats with ocean views, larger homes and estates on the hillsides and oceanfront, and homesites. Homes generally follow the town’s architectural standards, and many owners rent their homes when they are away.

Buyers confirm the homeowners’ association fees and rules, beach club access, rental arrangements, and, for any parcel near the beach, its status under the Maritime Zone. KRAIN works through each of these with the buyer and their attorney.

Location & Access

Las Catalinas is about 45 minutes from Liberia International Airport (LIR). Playa Potrero is about 6 kilometers south, Playa Flamingo about 8.5 kilometers, and Playas del Coco about 19 kilometers. Private bilingual schools in the Flamingo and Brasilito area are about 15 minutes away. Cars and deliveries are handled at the edge of town.
